Stricter visa rules

MEPs have backed amendments that will allow the European Commission to more quickly lift the visa-free regime for citizens of specific third countries if there are serious violations or security threats. The new rules add flexibility - the mechanism will allow a response to "hybrid threats", golden passport schemes or illegal detention decisions by international courts.
Under the current arrangements, the Commission had to meet strict value thresholds (e.g. an increase in illegal immigration or crime) before it could revoke visas. Now, it will be possible to react even earlier when the threat exceeds thresholds - for example, a 30% increase in serious crimes or a 20% low acceptance rate for asylum claims.
A major new feature is that states no longer face sanctions just as a whole - visas can be suspended for state officials who are responsible for abuses or violations.
