Call for a European position for peace in Ukraine
MEPs from the EPP, S&D, Renew and Greens/EFA groups requested that the resolution be added to Thursday's vote and it was approved. Parliament is thus officially calling on the EU institutions to define a common strategy for peace that respects international law and Ukrainian sovereignty.
Their decision comes at a time when a draft 28-point, US-backed peace plan for Ukraine is being circulated in the media that would, among other things, recognise Russia's control over Crimea and parts of the Donbas - a move that Ukraine and most of the EU find unacceptable.
In the resolution, Parliament stresses that any end to the war must be "just and lasting", based on international law and without premature concessions to Russia. At the same time, it calls for an active role for the EU - not only as an aid donor, but as a determined partner to shape the terms of peace.
This vote does not carry legal weight on its own, but it has a significant political impact: it sets a clear signal from the European Union that Ukraine's conditions for peace will be part of the European security architecture.
