Help for redundant workers in Sweden
The EU will mobilise €8.5 million from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help workers affected by sudden economic shocks. The aid concerns around 5 800 workers who were made redundant following the bankruptcy of Northvolt AB in spring this year.
Northvolt was one of Europe's key projects in the production of batteries for electric vehicles and was intended to reduce the EU's dependence on imports from China. However, the company ran into trouble due to a combination of operational problems and strong price competition in a global market dominated by state-subsidised non-EU manufacturers.
The EGF will fund career guidance, retraining, education, job search support and help for people who decide to start a business. The EU will cover around 60% of the total costs, with the Swedish authorities paying the rest.
The fund aims to show EU solidarity in practice - helping people who find themselves in difficulty due to changes in world trade or economic crises and preventing long-term unemployment in the affected regions.
