Supporting the initiative for affordable access to abortion

Parliament has backed the initiative, which draws attention to the fact that in some Member States women still face legal or practical barriers to accessing abortion. According to MEPs, this contravenes international human rights standards and the principle of bodily autonomy.

The supported proposal foresees a voluntary mechanism in which Member States could participate. With EU funding, it would then be possible to ensure access to safe termination of pregnancy for women who do not have legal or real access to it in their own country - always in accordance with the law of the country providing the care.

The Parliament also emphasised the EU's wider role in sexual and reproductive health, including accessible contraception, information on family planning and maternity care. MEPs also warned of the growing backlash against women's rights and condemned efforts to undermine them in Europe and beyond.

The European Commission now has until March 2026 to decide whether and how to follow up the initiative. More than 1.12 million EU citizens have supported "My Voice, My Choice", making it one of the few successful European citizens' initiatives.
