Condemnation of hybrid attacks by Belarus against Lithuania

Parliament draws attention to the repeated violation of Lithuanian airspace by drones and balloons, cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns and economic pressure. According to MEPs, these activities have increased significantly since 2024 and pose a risk to civil aviation, public safety and the economy. In one case, an unmanned aerial vehicle was even thought to be equipped with explosives.

Parliament is also paying particular attention to the use of migration as a political tool and to the retaliatory actions taken by Belarus following the closure of its borders, including the detention of European carriers. These actions are unacceptable, according to MEPs, and have a destabilising effect not only on Lithuania, but on the entire EU.

MEPs expressed full solidarity with Lithuania and supported its right to take appropriate defensive measures. They also called for further targeted sanctions against Belarusian officials and entities involved in hybrid operations, including the production and deployment of drones.

The Parliament also called for stronger EU-NATO cooperation on airspace protection, better intelligence sharing and increased investment in the security of the Union's eastern border. MEPs said hybrid threats must be tackled in a coordinated and long-term manner to prevent such attacks from becoming the new standard for European security.
