European Parliament calls for stronger security guarantees for Ukraine

Today, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the EU to actively engage in long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. MEPs stress that Ukraine's stability is crucial for the security of the whole of Europe and that the Union must step up military support, sanctions against Russia and diplomatic measures.
In particular, MEPs call for an increase in the supply of weapons and military training for Ukrainian forces, as well as the modernisation of its defence. They stressed the need for closer cooperation between the EU and NATO and called for further sanctions against Russia, particularly in the energy and financial sectors.
Parliament also called for the creation of a mechanism for reparations from Russia's frozen assets and for international accountability for war crimes committed in Ukraine.
MEPs believe that the EU must act with unity and determination to ensure that Ukraine can defend its independence and sovereignty in the long term.
