Stricter rules on chemicals: MEPs want better protection for health and the environment

A package of rules approved today by the European Parliament tightens the testing of chemicals, especially those used in industry, agriculture and common consumer products. Companies must provide more transparent information about the potential risks of their products, while regulators are given better tools to monitor and assess their safety.
A reduction in animal testing is also part of the package. MEPs are pushing for greater use of alternative methods such as computer simulations or laboratory tissue tests, which are not only more gentle but also faster and more accurate.
By approving the new rules, the EU is sending a clear signal that it wants tighter regulation of chemicals, more effective supervision and greater transparency on chemical safety.
