The European Parliament approves €5 billion in macro-financial assistance for Egypt to help stabilise its economy, which is struggling with high debt, inflation and regional instability. The EU sees Egypt as a key partner in the Mediterranean, but the financial support comes with strict conditions.

The aid will be disbursed in three instalments over three years, each dependent on economic reforms, debt reduction and more transparent management. MEPs also stressed that respect for human rights is key - if Egypt fails to meet agreed requirements, further payments may be suspended.

The Egyptian government has faced criticism for repression of the opposition, media censorship and restrictions on civil society. The EU therefore intends to monitor developments in the country closely. The agreement now needs to be confirmed by Member States and, if Egypt starts to comply with the conditions, the first tranche of aid could be disbursed later this year.
