The European Parliament today overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for the immediate release of political prisoners and an end to repression and surveillance of demonstrators and exiles. MEPs warn that the Lukashenko regime is extending repression to Belarusians abroad, including criminal prosecutions and confiscation of property.

MEPs therefore call on the Commission and Member States to facilitate the issuing of visas and residence permits to Belarusian exiles. They also call on European countries to ignore Belarusian arrest warrants issued through Interpol.

Parliament is also calling for sanctions against Belarus to be extended to the level of those imposed on Russia and for support for independent media and human rights organisations to be strengthened. At the same time, it calls on the International Criminal Court to speed up proceedings for crimes against humanity and on Member States to prosecute these crimes through universal jurisdiction.
