07. 05. 2025 - The European Parliament reaffirms that Turkey's EU accession process remains frozen. According to MEPs, Ankara continues to violate basic democratic principles and fails to meet key membership conditions.

MEPs today approved a resolution calling on the Council and the Commission not to reopen, for the time being, the frozen negotiations on Turkey's accession to the European Union. This is because of Erdogan's long-standing retreat from democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms. Parliament notes that the current Turkish Government is actively repressing the opposition, interfering with the independence of the judiciary and restricting media freedom.

At the same time, however, Members recognise that Turkey remains an important partner in areas such as migration, trade and security. That is why they are proposing a realistic framework for relations to replace the dysfunctional accession process. In practice, this means less talk of membership and more cooperation where it is in the interests of both sides.

Parliament is also calling on Ankara to respect the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, particularly with regard to the long-term imprisonment of political opponents. Criticism is also directed at Turkey's foreign policy - particularly its strained relations with Cyprus and its interference in regional conflicts.

Accession negotiations with Turkey were formally launched in 2005, but have been virtually suspended for many years. Today's vote shows that most MEPs see no room for change until Ankara starts to respect the EU's core values again.
