Supporting Ukraine's EU accession and calling for accelerated reforms

The Parliament approved Ukraine's progress report on the accession process and made it clear that further progress depends on a consistent continuation of reforms. It commended the progress made so far, particularly in the areas of the judiciary, the fight against corruption and public administration, but stressed the need to keep up the momentum and ensure transparency in the filling of senior positions.

MEPs also called on the European Commission to urgently open the negotiating "clusters" - the thematic areas of the accession talks - to enable faster progress towards membership. They said this would send a clear signal that Ukraine has a place in the EU.

The resolution stresses that Ukraine's future in the Union must be based on solid democratic foundations. Parliament therefore combines support for the country with a demand for further reforms that will strengthen the confidence of citizens and international partners.

At the same time, MEPs reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemned Russian aggression. They stressed that European assistance must not be allowed to wane and that faster integration of Ukraine into the EU is also in the interest of European security.
