MEPs warn that the blockade of humanitarian supplies is leading to starvation of civilians and a lack of basic necessities. They therefore call for the opening of all border crossings and uninterrupted access to aid.

Parliament also called for the immediate release of the hostages and for greater EU involvement in the negotiations. It strongly condemned the Hamas attacks, but stressed that Israeli self-defence must not mean attacks on civilians.

The resolution also calls for an investigation into all violations of international law and the imposition of sanctions against those responsible. It also supports the restoration of the Palestinian Authority as a legitimate partner.

The text passed by a majority vote and will serve as the EU's basic political position on the ongoing conflict.
