The European Parliament has strongly criticised the ongoing repression of the Uighurs in China, describing the treatment of this Muslim minority as crimes against humanity. MEPs drew attention to widespread human rights violations, including mass detention, forced labour and systematic surveillance of Uighurs by the Chinese authorities.

The resolution calls on the EU and Member States to extend sanctions against Chinese officials involved in the repression in Xinjiang. MEPs also call on international organisations to take further steps to investigate crimes committed against the Uighur population.

The European Parliament has also called on European companies to ensure that their supply chains are not linked to forced labour in China. MEPs stressed that the protection of human rights must remain a key priority in EU-China trade relations.
