On Thursday, MEPs rejected a motion of no confidence in the European Commission. The motion primarily targeted the Commission's approach to the EU-Mercosur trade agreement and generally criticised its approach to agriculture, food security and communication with the public.

The vote was preceded by a plenary debate in which Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič defended the Commission. Reservations were expressed that, according to the proposers of the motion, the Commission was not listening to farmers' concerns and was exceeding its powers, particularly in the area of trade policy.

However, very strict conditions would have to be met for a vote of no confidence to be passed – not only a qualified majority of votes cast, but also a majority of all MEPs. This threshold was not reached, and the Commission therefore continues its mandate unchanged.

The vote showed that although the Commission is the target of criticism, particularly in relation to international trade agreements, there is not yet sufficient political consensus in the European Parliament to dismiss it.
