In its resolution, the European Parliament has clearly stated that it does not recognise the so-called presidential elections that took place in separatist South Ossetia and Abkhazia. According to the MEPs, the authorities operating there under Russian control are illegitimate and contravene international law.

The text of the resolution emphasises that Georgia is a sovereign country with internationally recognised borders and that any attempts to create separatist regimes are illegal. At the same time, MEPs condemned the Russian occupation of these areas and called on Moscow to immediately end its military presence on Georgian territory.

In South Ossetia and Abkhazia, so-called elections have been repeatedly organised in recent years, which are not recognised by the international community. The Georgian Government considers these elections to be illegal and supported by Russia in order to destabilise the region. The European Parliament has stressed that Georgia has the full support of the EU on its path towards integration into European structures.

This resolution comes at a time when relations between the EU and Russia continue to deteriorate because of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The European Parliament has reiterated that any attempts to violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Georgian state will not be tolerated.
