European Parliament rejects ESN proposal on Romanian presidential elections

The ESN's proposal failed to pass through the European Parliament today, making it clear that MEPs do not want the EU to have a say on national issues such as the verdict of Romania's Central Electoral Commission. The ESN says the decision interferes with the democratic process. Opponents, on the other hand, argue that it is a measure against possible foreign influence.
Romania's presidential elections will be held again after the Constitutional Court invalidated the results of the previous ones. The court said there was evidence of Russian interference that could have influenced the outcome. Georgescu, a previously unknown politician, received massive support through the social network TikTok and surprisingly won the first round. However, Romanian authorities say the campaign was accompanied by unusual practices and interference from abroad, especially from Moscow. New elections are scheduled for May.
