The European Parliament approves a new support plan for Moldova

The European Parliament today approved an ambitious support package for Moldova to strengthen its economy, increase energy independence and speed up its path to European integration.
The plan includes €1.2 billion in financial assistance to help stabilise the economy and support reforms in the rule of law and the fight against corruption. The European Union is thus making it clear that it is behind Moldova and its pro-European course.
Another priority is energy security. Moldova, which is still heavily dependent on Russian gas, will receive support to diversify its energy sources, modernise its infrastructure and better connect to European energy networks. This is to help reduce Moscow's influence on the Moldovan economy.
MEPs also stressed that this package is not just about finance - it is about strategic cooperation to open the door to the European Union for Moldova. The challenge to the Moldovan Government is clear: continue reforms and strengthen democratic institutions.
The agreement, which has been provisionally approved by the European Parliament, must now be approved by the Council. The instrument will enter into force once it has been approved by Parliament and the Council and published in the EU's Official Journal.
