European Parliament calls for more support for Syria

Today, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for more active EU involvement in the reconstruction and political transition in Syria. MEPs warn that the decade-long conflict has caused widespread humanitarian suffering and destabilised the wider region. Stabilising the country is crucial not only for the Middle East but also for Europe's security, they said.
MEPs express concern about the continued authoritarian regime of Bashar al-Assad and stress that any support must be conditional on genuine reforms and the protection of human rights. They also call for more pressure on Russia and Iran, which are supporting the Assad regime in the conflict.
The resolution also calls for stronger EU involvement in the international negotiations on Syria's future. Parliament stresses that without an active European role, the humanitarian crisis risks deepening and destabilising the wider region.
