The European Parliament today adopted a resolution criticising the Thai government for escalating repression against opposition activists and independent media. MEPs call for the immediate release of political prisoners and respect for freedom of expression and assembly.

Parliament expresses concern at the misuse of insult laws to suppress the opposition and intimidate journalists. MEPs stress that a free civil society and democratic institutions are key to the stability of the country.

The resolution also calls on the European Commission and Member States to review relations with Thailand if there is no significant improvement in the human rights situation. The EU should use diplomatic and economic instruments to support democratic reforms in the country.

The European Commission must now prepare concrete steps to strengthen the protection of human rights in Thailand and increase pressure on the Thai Government to respect its international obligations.
