Resolution on the deteriorating situation of women in Afghanistan

In a resolution today, the European Parliament condemned systematic human rights violations in Afghanistan, especially against women and girls, whose access to education and work continues to be restricted by the Taliban. MEPs also drew attention to the persecution of minorities, human rights defenders and journalists.
The resolution stresses the need to increase humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, especially for vulnerable groups such as women, children and ethnic minorities. The EU should ensure that aid reaches those in need, while supporting organisations that help Afghans on the ground.
The European Parliament has called on the EU and Member States not to continue to recognise the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan until it respects fundamental human rights. MEPs said any cooperation with the Taliban should be strictly conditional on respect for women's rights and democratic principles.
