The European Parliament today adopted a resolution expressing deep concern about human rights violations in Belarus and the deteriorating situation of political prisoners. MEPs say the regime of Alexander Lukashenko continues to crack down on the opposition, silence independent media and suppress basic civil rights.

MEPs called on the EU to extend sanctions against those responsible for the repressive measures and called for tougher measures against the Belarusian regime, including increased economic and diplomatic pressure.

The European Parliament also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including Sakharov Prize winner Sviatlana Tsikhanouski and other representatives of the democratic opposition. The EU should also strengthen its support for civil society and independent media in the country.
