Unanimous support for the protection of journalists

MEPs on Monday unexpectedly agreed across the political spectrum - the proposal of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group was supported by all MEPs present, with the exception of five abstentions. Such unanimity, i.e. that no one voted against, is extraordinary in the European Parliament. The motion calls on the Commission and the Council of the EU to make a statement on the attack on the Italian reporter and to take concrete action against the growing number of attacks, threats and legal pressure against journalists in Europe.
The vote was prompted by the recent attempted attack on Italian investigative journalist Sigfrid Ranucci, known for his programme Report on the public broadcaster RAI. Ranucci has faced threats and pressure in recent months over his work on corruption and abuse of power cases.
