Resolution on the decline of democracy and the threat to political pluralism in Georgia

The European Parliament has expressed serious concern about developments in Georgia and warned that the country is moving away from European values. MEPs criticised the Georgian government's repressive actions against the opposition, independent media and NGOs, which they said threatened democratic principles and the rule of law.
The resolution points to the growing pro-Russian influence in the country and warns that continued political pressure on the opposition could affect Georgia's EU integration process. MEPs called on the European Commission to reconsider its financial support to Georgia if the government there does not stop undermining democratic institutions.
The European Parliament also expressed its support for the Georgian people and their pro-European aspirations. It stressed that future cooperation between the EU and Georgia will depend on respect for democratic principles and the protection of fundamental rights.
