Decision setting up a special committee for the European Shield of Democracy

The European Parliament decides to create a new standing committee on democracy, the rule of law and electoral integrity. Its main objective will be to monitor and strengthen the protection of electoral processes in EU Member States against disinformation, cyber threats and foreign interference.

MEPs warned of the growing influence of authoritarian regimes seeking to influence political decisions in Europe. The committee will therefore focus on analysing threats, strengthening European rules on campaign transparency and coordinating the fight against the manipulation of public opinion.

The new committee will work with the European institutions, national governments and civil society to ensure a fair and secure electoral environment across the EU.
