The European Parliament has decided to set up a new committee to deal with housing issues in the EU in response to rising house prices, a shortage of affordable housing and the deteriorating rental market in many Member States.

MEPs warned that housing is a fundamental human right and that high housing costs threaten social stability. The Committee will therefore focus on promoting investment in affordable and sustainable housing, exchanging best practices between Member States and combating speculative practices in the housing market.

Preventing homelessness and finding long-term solutions for the most vulnerable will also be a key issue. The Committee will work with regional and national governments to promote inclusive and fair housing policies across the EU.
