Resolution on action against the continuing repression and fraudulent elections in Belarus

22. 01. 2025 - The European Parliament calls the upcoming presidential elections in Belarus rigged and undemocratic. MEPs condemned the ongoing repression of the opposition and civil society and called for stronger sanctions against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

The European Parliament adopts a resolution condemning the upcoming presidential elections in Belarus as unfree and rigged. According to MEPs, the regime of Alexander Lukashenko does not allow fair political competition and suppresses the opposition, independent media and civil society.

The resolution highlights the mass arrests of political opponents, censorship and systematic human rights violations. MEPs also expressed support for democratic forces in Belarus and called on the EU to extend sanctions against regime officials responsible for repressive measures.

The European Parliament also reaffirmed its opposition to the Lukashenko regime and its support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. MEPs stressed that the future of Belarus lies in democracy and respect for the rule of law and called on the international community to put more pressure on the Belarusian leadership.
