The European Parliament adopts a resolution reaffirming its support for the democratic opposition in Venezuela. According to MEPs, the Venezuelan opposition is facing systematic repression by the Nicolás Maduro regime, which intimidates opposition politicians, imprisons dissidents and suppresses freedom of speech and assembly.

The resolution expresses deep concern about the forthcoming presidential elections in the country, which MEPs believe will not be free or fair. In particular, they criticise the manipulation of the electoral process, the exclusion of opposition candidates and the intimidation of voters.

The European Parliament calls for greater international pressure on the Venezuelan regime, including the extension of sanctions against those responsible for human rights violations. MEPs also call on EU Member States to continue to provide humanitarian aid to the Venezuelan population, which is suffering the consequences of the political and economic crisis.
