European Parliament calls for a strong fund to fight social exclusion

MEPs say the current support from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) is fragmented and insufficient. A strengthened fund should provide long-term financial assistance to the most vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly and people with disabilities. The aim is not only direct financial support, but also investment in education, healthcare and access to decent housing.
Parliament has also stressed that the fight against social exclusion must be a priority at EU level. Current challenges, such as inflation and the impact of the energy crisis, require a strong and coordinated response. MEPs therefore called on the European Commission to come up with a concrete proposal to strengthen the fund as soon as possible.
Currently, ESF+ is the EU's main financial instrument for improving worker mobility, job opportunities and strengthening social cohesion. With a budget of €142.7 billion for the period 2021-2027, it contributes to EU policies on employment, social training and skills, as well as to structural reforms in these areas.
